I think you sell the government short- the American people love their government. Older Americans love those social security checks they receive- they don't want that part of government to get smaller. Disabled Americans like the Americans with Disabilities Act, they don't want that part of the government to get smaller. College students want more loans and business men want more money in the SBA, farmers want more subsidies, and price supports. Everybody loves their piece of the pie- we just haven't been taught how to love the other guys piece- not since the depression and WWII has anyone tried to teach Americans that. Instead it's all about selfishness and keeping MY slice of the pie and MYmoney and getting getting getting. Oh sure- conservatives talk about helping hands, but oddly enough, I don't see a lot of conservatives helping out in the environment, do you? Do you suppose it is conservatives going to teach in the Indian Reservations? How about the Peace Core? Maybe THAT'S where the compassionate conservatives go. Because they sure as heck went somewhere, since I've never met one.
