I have to say that I have considerable admiration for Zhu Rhonghi and the efforts he has made to modernize both the political and economic systems in China. But he still doesn't have the support of the army and that is a major factor in controlling China.
There have been 2 main groups that separate the party - namely, the hardliner Beijing gang versus more liberal Shanghai gang in the top political system. Li Peng is a hardliner belonged to Beijing gang and he would be retired pretty soon. So don't worry. President Jiang and PM Zhu Rhonghi are from Shanghai. They pretty much take control in authority. When Jiang steps down as President, he could be the one controlling the army behind the political scene. Zhu is still fighting tough against corruption. So we need to support him in some degree. In the near future, I expect to see a much younger liberal political figure emerged to be the President.
. The State becomes the religion... the answer to the people's prayers and hopes.
At least there's no such belief as "afterlife", "reincarnation", "the meaning of heaven and hell", "worship of god" .... and there is no bible to govern how people live according to god's will. The govt can change any law anytime whenever one comes as authority to take the law in effect. Can you change anything in the Bible ? Of course not. Moreover, how do you define "communism" ? Do you think the current Chinese govt is not as opened as the one in '50s and '60s in terms of market economy, property ownerships ? I guess we need to be patient for the whole system to be reformed. This is NOT an OVERNIGHT phenomenon.
So when you get worried about the fact that western values are invading China with "dangerous" thoughts, remember that those ideas originally were "eastern" and the west was previously "invaded" and survived to its betterment.
Come on Ron, your eastern means eastern orthodox in Turkey or Israel! Don't be mistaken it with the FAR EAST. I think you are offline a bit.
Chinese military leaders have attempted to intimidate the Philipines over ownership of the Spratly Islands.
Everyone just want to take the rich oil resource there. So you could say they are intimidating among one another.
That would mean that China should be more frightened of India than it is the US.
You bet! The Indian troop could match toward the mainland with ease had the Chinese not to take foothold at the Himalayas as defensive purpose. Geographically and historically speaking, China and US situations are completely different. China are facing all sorts of threats surrounding its border, while the US hardly has any - maybe a tiny island called Cuba.
