I don't think there is an organized left in this country with a platform that radical and moderate liberals can embrace, such as socialized medicine, massive government spending to promote culture, technology, science, mathematics, art, music, philosophy, women's rights, alternative lifestyles
I think the Democrat Party embraces most of what you list here, do they not? The DLC may demur from one or two of these things.

Regarding Thoreau and women, I thought his poem To the Maiden in the East raised questions about a romantic interest there.
I like Thoreau a lot, but I think his "solitude" has been overplayed and romanticized. He built his famous cabin on a woodlot owned by Emerson, and it was not very far from town. He probably had frequent visitors and interacted with many passersby. |
