It's no surprse that most of these top tier companies--be they mature, middle age or young--do have top management teams.

Carl Kaysen, when he was director of the Institute of Advanced Study, used to have a rule of thumb: Top-notch people appoint top-notch people; second-rate people appoint fourth-rate people.

This "back of the envelope" rule, imo, applies doubly to companies and often marks the difference between an almost and WOW.
