Ashcroft on MSFT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Attorney General-designate
John Ashcroft said on Wednesday a court decision to split
Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) would have
``substantial consequences,'' but he was not ready to venture an
opinion on what he would do with the case now if confirmed.

Ashcroft was asked at confirmation hearings before the
Senate Judiciary Committee how he would handle the
Microsoft case, which was pursued aggressively during the past
several years under the Clinton administration.

``The judgement of the District Court obviously would have substantial consequences,''
Ashcroft said. ``I would look very carefully at this case, relying on the expertise of the
department in deciding strategy for the case. And I'm not in a position to assure you that I
would do anything other than that, at this time.''
