Sales of Desktop PCs Suffer Double-Digit Decline at End of December 2000
January 17, 2001 (TOKYO) -- Toward the end of 2000, the decline in the sale of desktop PCs in Japan was large.

Overall PC sales in the fourth week of December 2000 (Dec. 18-24, 2000) declined by 6.7 percent in units and by 6.1 percent in value from the previous week.

In comparison with the same week the previous year (Dec. 20-26, 1999), sales increased by 43.6 percent in units and rose by 30.1 percent in value.

The average sales price increased by 993 yen from 179,956 yen in the previous week to 180,949 yen. These figures were compiled by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company that collects and supplies POS data for 3,200 large-volume household electrical appliance shops in Japan.

As opposed to the sagging desktop sales, sales of notebook PCs declined only by 2.7 percent in the third week of December in comparison with the previous week, and declined only by 2.9 percent in the fourth week from the week before. Put another way, the notebook sales managed to maintain a high-level close to the record sales registered in the second week of December.

On the other hand, sales of desktop PCs dropped by 5.7 percent in the third week from the previous week, and decreased even more sharply by 10.5 percent in the fourth week from the previous week. This means that the sales declined to the level observed in late November in terms of the number of units sold.
