Joe,

There is a nuclear plant between San Diego and LA. It was shut down last week because high surf was clogging the cooling system with seaweed. Like all of California it is located in a dangerous seismic zone, and has the double whammy of being on the beach. That makes it particularly vulnerable to terrorist attack, and makes the effect of an accident far more serious.

And yes, the entire state of California is active geologically. The largest volcano in the world (Long valley Caldera) is simmering under the east side of the state, and has shown signs of activity recently.

When my first child was born, I was very concerned because my wife had narrowly avoided the main plume from Chernobyl. Nuclear Power is not a cure-all for our idiotic waste of energy in this country.
