The time frame you are viewing or trading in determines how you measure bottoms or tops. A top to a daytrader differs from the top a long term investor seeks.

Pivots or changes in trend are another name for top and bottoms, if one thinks about it. I suggest you look at Gann swing charts where a bottom occurs when there is a higher- high than the previous bar for three consecutive time periods. You only know that a bottom occurred a minimum of three bars later. A bar might measure a minute, a day, a month or a year depending on your perspective.
