The Golf TDI diesel engine is one heck of a good piece of engineering. A real torque generator, yet economical.

My partner and I drove up to Ottawa and return on a single tank full,... 1100 Km on 53 litres. (g)

I will admit that I drove the whole trip at 110 to 120 km, so benefited from an eased throttle condition. (g)
