Ashcroft's Crime Claims

Letter to the Editor:
From The New York Times
January 15, 2001

Your Jan. 12 editorial gave many good
reasons for opposing John Ashcroft's
confirmation as attorney general. I would like
to add one more: his hyperbolic proclamations
about youth crime. Although youth crime has reached a 25-year low, Mr.
Ashcroft claimed that it was near an all-time record high. Although there
are five times as many adults arrested for violent crimes as juveniles, he
asserted that violent offenders are "more typically" juveniles. And even
though the odds of being shot in a school in 1998 were one in two
million, Mr. Ashcroft claimed that "we have killers in the classrooms and
predators on the playground."

It's one thing for a senator to make misleading statements, but the
attorney general is in charge of the departments that analyze crime
statistics. If Mr. Ashcroft is confirmed, it will seriously damage public
faith in the objectivity of Justice Department data.
