"In 1983, Hyde showed a similar lack of enthusiasm in pursuing one of his own. Dan Crane, a former fellow representative from
Illinois, was found by the House Ethics Committee to be guilty of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17 year old female
working as a congressional page. When an appropriate punishment was discussed, Hyde spoke out in favor of leniency for
Crane. He stated "We sit here not to characterize the crime, the breach, the transgression, because we all know the
transgression...He is embarrassed, he is humiliated, he is disgraced...Every shred of dignity will be stripped away from Dan
Crane...I suggest to the members that compassion and justice are not antithetical; they are complementary." Crane was
censured rather that expelled by the Democratic led House."
