Streisand Lobbying Senate Against Ashcroft

Megastar songbird Barbra Streisand, who threatened to leave the country if George Bush Sr. won re-election in 1992, has been lobbying senators who will decide whether John Ashcroft becomes attorney general in the new Bush administration.

Writing in Variety Thursday morning, Hollywood columnist Army Archerd reports that the left-wing singer is busily working the phones to gin up opposition to the Bush AG pick, and has already spoken personally with 15 senators in hopes of getting them to ditch their former Missouri colleague.

Streisand described her anti-Ashcroft sales pitch to the Hollywood gossip maven:

"We live in a great country," she tells the targeted lawmaker. "We allow a woman the right of choice over her own body. We have some basic gun-control laws. We have affirmative action. We have laws that protect the environment. We have separation of church and state. We have laws that guarantee protection of civil rights and liberties."

Then Streisand goes in for the kill. "Why would we allow the chief law enforcement officer to be a person who doesn't believe in any of these laws?"
