Telecoms Rebound on Nasdaq's Gains; PCCW Back to HK$4

Telecoms plays including Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd. (0008) posted a technical rebound after gains on the Nasdaq overnight.

At 10:26 a.m. Hong Kong time, PCCW rose 3.2 percent to HK$4, after an accumulated loss of 23 percent since the start of this year. The rebound ended its five-day slump triggered by concerns that Britain's Cable & Wireless Plc may dump its shares after a lock-up period expires in mid-February.

China Unicom Ltd. (0762), which holds the core operations of China¡¦s No. 2 phone company, surged 5.3 percent to HK$11.90. Turnover was huge at HK$93.28 million, already half of yesterday's total.

China Mobile (Hong Kong) (0941), the nation's largest mobile phone company, inched up 0.9 percent to HK$46.90. Turnover was HK$203.9 million, a third of yesterday's total.

SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings Ltd. (0315), Hong Kong's third-largest mobile phone operator, also rose 4.3 percent to HK$12.

The Nasdaq Composite Index finished up 64.24 points, or 2.5 percent, at 2682.79 on Wednesday.
