Ashcroft's Wife Taught at Howard University:
WASHINGTON (AP) - While John Ashcroft fends off talk of being racially insensitive, his wife charts her next step - after teaching at one of the nation's leading black universities.
Janet E. Ashcroft taught business law and individual income tax as a visiting assistant professor and a temporary assistant professor in Howard University's School of Business from January 1996 until last December.
``We had a talk and she said it was good timing for her to leave,'' said Barron Harvey, the business school's dean. ``She was a very good professor, and her departure was not related in any way, shape or form to her husband's nomination for attorney general.''
The Ashcrofts, both lawyers, co-authored a new edition of ``Law for Business,'' a textbook published in 1999.
At Howard, some of Janet Ashcroft's former students described her as an intense taskmaster with high expectations who did not like being challenged and gave out few A's.
``I thought she was real nice but she's like a stickler for the rules,'' said Samantha Oden, a 21-year-old marketing major.
``She didn't seem bothered that she was surrounded by black people, she didn't seem uncomfortable,'' she said.
