Good point. Compaq decided that 24 8-way SMP servers (each using 700 MHz P3 Xeons w/ 2M of cache) can be clustered together and beat out traditional big-iron servers in TPC-C:

So even 8-way SMP servers are considered "commodity" compared to what's out there already. Think you can do better by networking 192 single-processor Athlon boxes?
