John - I'm a small software publisher of my own products. We market direct, through resellers and by royalty arrangements.

My view on giving up profits by discounting to resellers or entering into royalty deals is from the perspective of:

1) Does the deal put me into markets where I'm not known and would have difficulty achieving results?
2) Does the deal serve to enhance the visibility of my products, and, therefore, the greater acceptance of them in the markets in which I operate efficiently (profitably)?

The real benefit to Iomega is not the money they will receive from media makers, although it will surely be a nice extra income. The benefit will be the lower prices of the consumable aspect of these drives and the enhancement of acceptability of the drives to the consumer.

If Iomega is to fulfill its promise of becoming the standard in this arena, it must gain wide acceptance. Being the undisputed leader is where the real bucks are at.
