The time to short BRCM, JNPR and SDLI was in December. The reason to short them then was because the hedge fund traders were shorting them. They were controlling the movement of these stocks and when they released the pressure, these stocks rose again.

The problem with the market in the smaller float stocks like NUFO, EXFO and ELNT is that traders think they can fix a market, in other words, they try to promote or disparage these stocks to manipulate their price action. It is this manipulation by small traders that is so dangerous because at least when big hedge fund traders control the market there is some legal authority for inside trading but with these websites and bulletin boards the SEC is far behind on the stock manipulation front. I hope someday and with the help of some people I know of, the SEC will start monitoring the websites and posts of these unscrupulous traders and start to prosecute some of them.

I think that when the final story is written for this Internet boom, the results will be that the successful people will be those that invested in new companies with strong growth potential and added to those investments during the downturns and the losers will be those that invested in companies that were over hyped with no growth potential and then continued to trade stocks even after losing money.

It is a shame that so many people lost money in the market last year but it was inevitable because of the fraud that was involved. I hope this year will be different for alot of traders but I think the key will be the prosecution of some of these traders who have tried to manipulate the market.
