The United States will formally announce an
end to US economic sanctions on
Yugoslavia, a White House official said on
Thursday.

However, Washington will continue to
impose sanctions on some 81 Serbs,
including former President Slobodan
Milosevic, his family and members of his
entourage, the official added.

The decision is one of
the last executive
orders signed by
President Bill Clinton,
who will step down
Saturday as
President-elect
George W Bush
assumes the nation's
highest office.

Mr Clinton had
promised the people
of Yugoslavia that
sanctions would be
lifted once democracy was restored.

The EU and the US had imposed a series of
sanctions against Yugoslavia including a ban
and investments and credits and an oil
embargo.

Shift in attitude

But the fall of Mr Milosevic and installation of
Vojislav Kostunica as president has marked
a change in relations between the two
countries.

French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine has
also said that the EU is ready to lift
sanctions.

Mr Vedrine admitted earlier this year that
there was scepticism about the effect of
sanctions against Yugoslavia among a
growing number of EU member states.

Some members were concerned that Mr
Milosevic was in fact benefiting from the
growing black market in goods, while his
country was being impoverished.
