Home Depot Warns on Quarter Earnings

ATLANTA (Reuters) - No. 1 home improvements retailer Home Depot on
Friday said it expects fourth-quarter earnings to be worse than Wall Street
estimates due to a slowing economy and falling prices for building materials,
and sees the weakness persisting for the first half of 2001.

The fourth-quarter shortfall will be 20 percent below the year-ago period and
far greater than Wall Street had expected. ''We expect that many of the same
economic factors affecting sales in the current quarter will persist in the first
half of fiscal 2001,'' Home Depot (NYSE:HD - news) said.

In pre-open trade, the company's shares fell to $41-1/2 from a close of
$44-1/4.
