I too have been thinking of Greenspan's motives lately and find them quite puzzling. Here a few possibilities that I have come up with.

1. Because he knows the current system of fiat money is a malingering disease that is slowly sucking the life out of good, honest, hard-working people, he has decided to scorch the earth to rid it of the disease and then rebuild with a better system?

2. He is using the world economy as his private laboratory where he is testing his economic theories. Example: He thinks he could have stopped the great depression. To prove it he first had to create a giant bubble. Now he can see if he can actually stop it from bursting. What could more fun?

3. He is senile.
