Vietnam's Saigon Postel has signed a US$230 million contract with South Korea's SLD Telecom, a joint-venture of SK Telecom, LG Electronics and Dongah Electric to build a CDMA based network in the country. The network should begin commercial services in April offering coverage in Hanoi and the surrounding area. The network will be expanded nationwide over the next five years and will include the provision of cellular payphones for rural areas, and a possible upgrade to cdma2000. The country currently has two GSM networks.
