Since I have absolutely no evidence of that, I can't answer your subsequent question. I started a portfolio of 8 equipment stocks on 28 Sept., 2000. A backend company, KLIC, is the best performer of the group (http://www.siliconinvestor.com/portfolio/detail.gsp?pid=9219891).

In this case there may be specific reasons why a backend company is outperforming (the rapidly increasing demand for licensing Klic's FlipChip technology, the establishment of a testing division, etc.).
