You have definitely captured the essence of the matter. And it seems to me that this type of person migrates to the Democratic party. If a republican does something stupid, he usually gets booted, abandoned etc., ala Packwood, North or whomever. The dems circle the wagons, never admit, blah blah blah... Politically, this may place GOP in a weaker position, but I am more comfortable with it.
