Rhino Rush at Showtime
by Flattop

Earlier this week a proposed fight between the Clifford Etienne and Francois "The White Buffalo" Botha fell apart when the career future of "The Black Rhino" on HBO could not be finalized. HBO had wanted to showcase the lean-mean-fighting machine on the undercard of a March 24th fight featuring WBO heavychamp Wladimir Klitschko versus the always-popular Derrick Jefferson on tape delay from Germany.

HBO boxing honcho Kery Davis confirmed, "Clifford wants to go a different direction" and Rhino Promotions promoter Les Bonano commented, "I want to thank HBO for their offer but it was not what we are looking for at this time."

Translation: Rhino Rush at Showtime!

Sources at Showtime speculated that Etienne could be matched against David Tua in Tuaman's first fight since dropping an uninspired decision for the big one to WBC/IBF champ Lennox Lewis back on Nov 11th.Etienne is high-volume power-punching prospect who holds victories over respectable foes Lamon Brewster, Cliff Couser and Lawrence Clay-Bey.

Tua is usually known for his high output of powershots despite his lackluster efforts against the consummate champion Lewis. An Etienne-Tua powerblaster could have the winner facing another busy slugger by the name of Tyson. The winner of this round-robin would be the answer for a challenger to Lennox.

Cajun promoter Bonano confided, "We are close to signing with Showtime. Clifford would be a great match against Tyson, Tua or Holyfield." Etienne would be a much-needed new face over at Showtime where the older generation of Tyson and Holyfield are looking at a couple of more years.

"The Black Rhino" would find a lot of opportunity making his boxing home at Showtime. And on the other side of the street, most of the unsigned second tier heavyweights featured at HBO - Kirk Johnson, Hasim Rahman, Oleg Maskaev - are in gridlock waiting for the dancecard of champ Lennox Lewis to open.

Where is Chris Byrd when you need him? LPS5 note: I dunno, I never have and never will need him.

Good News around the corner: HBO will be featuring fresh blood on March 24th when Klitschko faces Jefferson...on the undercard the gigantic "Mount" Whitaker would be taking on tough stepping stone Francois "The White Buffalo" Botha.

Where do these guys come up with their nicknames?
