Tom Press, believes the markets are still in a very difficult period, but that growth will resume in the second half. "So we're positioning ourselves in companies that will do well when that growth comes back," Press says.
Press, portfolio manager of the Strong U.S. Emerging Growth Fund, was Friday's Taking Stock guest on Street Signs. Overall, he says his fund likes to stress diversified portfolios, particularly in light of a possible Fed move--which Press believes is inevitable. "Our feeling is Fed will have to lower rates," he says.

• This oil service company is a good play on energy
• Our feeling is that energy prices will remain around current levels, possibly a little weaker; and, at these price levels, this company has a lot of leverage

Paul McManus, portfolio manager of John Hancock Core Equity Fund, remains cautious about the stock market in the near term, given the possibility of decelerating economic growth and more earnings disappointments.
During his appearance on Today's Business Monday, McManus said his long term outlook is more bullish.

• Showing steady earnings growth

Jon Burnham, chairman and CEO of Burnham Asset Management and portfolio manager with the Burnham Fund, said we have seen the lows and the weak market is now behind us.
He said the rise in interest rates and the reduction of the money supply was overdone.
"There will be more reductions between now and June," Burnham said.
He also said he expects tax relief in some form from the Bush administration and Congress.
Burnham predicted a good market environment and is optimistic prices will be substantially higher than they are now.

• A definite turn down in their business
• It is time to buy auto stocks when things (economy) are lousy and when interest rates are being reduced
• A very cheap stock with great products, good earnings, tons of cash
• The have about $22 billion in cash; about $22/share
