Mount Whitaker: Large And In Charge
by Flattop

Late Update: It has been confirmed that "Mount" Whitaker will be fighting "The White Buffalo" Francois Botha on the HBO undercard of WBO heavy champ Wladimir Klitschko vs. Derrick Jefferson on March 24 in Germany.

#9 WBC and #8 WBO Lance "Mount" Whitaker (22-1, 18 KOs) is ready move heavyweight mountains again. Whitaker is a "mountain of a man" at 6'8" weighing in around 250 pounds but recently the "Mount" was fell by the diagnosis that his namesake Lance Jr. had leukemia. A family man first, Whitaker dropped off a HBO fight against Michael Grant to devote his attention to his six-year old son. The good news is that "Little Mountain" is responding well to chemotherapy and the Big "Mount" is ready to climb up the heavyweight hill.

The only loss on Whitaker's resume is a controversial split decision to Lou Savarese. Whitaker and Savarese went toe-to-toe for the first five rounds; in the sixth Whitaker unleashed an incredible 122 punches - 61 of them connecting - sending Savarese to one knee for the count. The controversy centered on whether Big Lou beat the count of 10 and if referee Steve Smoger encouraged the floored Savarese to continue.

America Presents promoter Dan Goosen said, "Mount is the heavyweight that no one wants to fight. I like it when fighters don't want to fight you. It means you are dangerous." Whitaker added, "I am large and in charge. Give me another shot at Michael Grant. Let me fight the pretender contenders like Kirk Johnson, Oleg Maskev and Hasim Rahman. I guarantee youthat I will knockout out all of them on the same night!"

Goosen and Whitaker hinted that "Big plans and big guys" are in the future for the "Mount."

LPS5 note: I've never been particularly impressed by this guy other than by his size. I actually think he'd do his best against an equally sized guy like Lewis, while against Tyson, Tua, Holyfield, or Etienne he'd be awkward and suscepible. Anyone else want to weight in on Mount Whitaker?
