The good news: the Dell owners manual for my XPRS400 has clear details for changing the battery. The bad news: I will have to restore the correct settings to the system setup program. The appendix that contains the information on system setup program is 23 pages! My inclination: replace the battery and deal with error messages! What's the worst that could happen? Heck, I've got a brand new computer to fire up if this one goes down. Just hope the new one has a fresh battery!
