IBM and Vodafone to launch global Internet portal for wireless services

Vodafone AirTouch has selected IBM to design, build, manage and run a global Internet portal for wireless devices, including mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) from Ericsson, Nokia, Palm Computing, and other leading companies.

“We are announcing our plans for the launch of this global platform together with partnerships with world-class companies for systems operation, information content and access,” says Chris Gent, chief executive of Vodafone. “We are opening a new chapter in the development of the Internet, adding a fourth ‘W’ to the World Wide Web. From now on, it will be the World Wide Wireless Web.”

In addition, IBM will integrate applications and content from leading e-businesses such as Charles Schwab, Sabre, Travelocity.com and InfoSpace.com.
