I cannot understand why ANYONE, republican or democrat, would want to ruin lives (and not just those of the people put in jail) and spend tons of taxpayer money on a "war" on drugs that should never be fought. We should have learned from prohibition that criminalizing a substance only fractures your society and allows a tasty opportunity for organized crime. Almost everyone can support protecting children from drugs (including alcohol and cigarets)- that should be what we concentrate on- that and treatment programs for people who want treatment- whether for alcohol or for other drugs.

It is pure emotionalism that causes people to think punishment is the solution to this problem. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is one definition of insanity- I would argue that the war on drugs is an example of collective insanity identical to prohibition.
