I think the only way to avert complete disaster is with very very high prices to reduce demand,

I think conservation is a better solution. Either way demand will have to be reduced so why opt for a solution that will throw us into recession? If the market theorists are right a reduction of 20 percent on the demand side should bring a major drop in price. All it takes is leadership. We might get some after a few more blackouts.
