There was a joke going around before the 1968 elections.

Two guys, one Republican and one Democrat who met before the 1964 election, met again right before the 1968 election. The Republican says to the Democrat, Do you remember at the last election you told me that if I voted for Goldwater that there would be a half-million men in Vietnam and riots in the streets?". "Yes," replied the Democrat. "So what?" "Well," says the Republican. "I voted for Goldwater and you were right."
