Dan, Re: do you have any ideas WHERE Intel will spend the $7.5B capex for 2001?
>>Well, WHAT some of it will be spent on is clear, those SUN servers are so darned expensive...
A case in point: during the past year, subsidiary Intel Online Services began operating huge server farms to host company Web sites and chose to offer Sun machines because customers demanded them, says Renee James, marketing director at the subsidiary.
That was pre Alpha, Beta, Neutron particles, Gamma rays, Sun Spots, or all of the above causes No ECC on the cache Sun machines to go down days. It was also pre Sun buying Cobalt. Cobalt's latest server appliance may be good, but their original ones were junk. When you're an online service, you do put in whatever hardware, software, connectivity, etc. your customers call for. I wonder how much call there is for Sun anymore.
Actually, most of the capex will be ticketed for process and fab, like Elmer said (and Andy Bryant said on the CC).
