I believe HD has put more hardware stores out of business than independent lumber stores. Basically, its variety & volume.

..and price. The mom and pop hardware stores cannot compete on a price basis. HD has also put put alot of pressure on stores like HQ, Wickes, Lowes, etc. HD will move right into their markets and take their business. Very aggressive. Maybe in a few decades we will start seeing little boutique hardware stores selling "organic" high-margin hardware (I have no idea what that is...just thinking into the future).
