if the Republicans choose to take a more extreme mode in their way of government, will in my eyes, deliver the next election to the Democrats.

The Dems will have to decide whether their best political interests lie in working with the Reps on the people's business or accentuating the differences. They'll probably do a little of both since they're essentially leaderless. I expect that whatever the Dems do will be less important than what the Reps do. The next election is theirs to lose. IMO they'd be best served by keeping their closet-cases in the closet.
