Chuck, it's true that the move to 3G is being delayed by GSM/TDMA proponents who would rather not spend money to upgrade at a time they are buying more spectrum. It's also true that demand for CDMA is turning out differently from what one would have assumed a year ago, before China temporarily rejected further expansion of CDMA. But there are also positives that weren't known a year ago: The new breed of chips with GPS capabilities is just one example. The new Internet capable handsets from Samsung and others are also encouraging users to switch from poorer performing systems to those using CDMA. As long as there is competition in a given market, such as in the U.S., the companies with the lowest prices and/or best phone features will attract more customers. The competing GSM and TDMA systems already are at a cost disadvantage in terms of efficiency of spectrum use and Internet access speed. In foreign countries, I am very impressed with the movement toward Wireless Local Loops in India. This is the application that QUALCOMM has always recarded as sort of the killer app.

Could near term earnings disappointments (e.g., less than a 30 percent increase in operating earnings plus earnings from licensing and royalties) occur? Probably, but as long as the major markets remain open to competition, I would rather be in this stock for the long haul.
