eichler: Somehow this thread appeared on my screen and a look at a few posts suggests that there are some sharp people here.
As for football betting, my best friend, Barney Bufflekarp (not his real name) is a successful and retired bookmaker. He told me this: Most NFL games are legit and not fixed. The "lines" put out are "solid." And the lines reflect not just the oddsmakers opinion as to the probable winner, but are set to attract the most money wagered. He did not care who won, only that his book was fairly balanced, content to take his vig. So, if say the underdog opens at 2 1/2 and money wagered on the favorite is too heavy...they'll up the line to 3 or perhaps 3 1/2 to attract more money on the underdog...to keep the betting going and "balance" the books. Smart bookmakers attempt to have an equal amount bet on each team by their clients. I know you disagree, but I'm giving you my best from a bookmaker that I greatly respect.
