I think such an absolute one-front agenda is absent. I'm a liberal by some standards but conservative by others. Conservative means to act in cautious manner - a conservative design is one that errs on the side of caution. Our environmental management has not been conservative in this sense. Who can argue that? But in practice political conservative frequently means reactionary (desiring to going back to some previous time where things were believed to be "better").

Invariably such alleged utopian times are where a small segment of society was socially isolated from the larger whole. In such isolation, people can embrace all sorts of things and, if the community is homogeneous enough, they can perceive it as entirely acceptable to everyone they know. It is not a big leap of faith to them that everyone beyond this circle should embrace it.

I've been it 38 of the 50 states. I've lived in every corner and in the center, in Tennessee. I've got a pretty good idea of how much variability there is in this country and it is a lot. Many people who'd you'd think would be judgmental aren't and many people who should know better (because they are educated) are.
