This international study found no correlation between education and atheism and that atheists tended to have been such all their lives.

The study actually says:

83% of the Hard Core Atheists say they never believed in God, 61% say they never attended church services when they were eleven or twelve years old and 9% more say they only rarely attended.

That is not exactly "all their lives" in the sense that it would be if the people in question were raised as atheists. It suggests that a conscious choice was made, but that it was made at an early age; too early, I admit, for education to have much to do with it.

I decided that I was an atheist at around the age of 12, but I think it was less a matter of deciding that I didn't believe - and my parents were quite religious - than of realizing that I had never really believed.

Odd. I wonder if some people are just born unconvinced, and come to realize it in pre-adolescence.

If we could prove that atheism was genetically transmitted, and thus inherent in some individuals, do you think the religious right would approve the use of genetic manipulation to "correct" this condition?

Weird world.

An odd document, that study, and really very badly written. I should offer them my services, though I doubt that they could afford me. Unless they have a grant....
