Glenayre, Nortel Announce Joint Marketing Agreement to Provide Personal Enhanced Services With Nortel's New DMS-Programmable Services Architecture

CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Integrated Network Group of Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:GEMS) announced today that Glenayre has signed a Letter-of-Intent with Nortel (Northern Telecom) (NYSE:NT) to jointly market Glenayre's MVP(R) modular voice processing system along with Nortel's new DMS-Programmable Services Architecture (PSA). Nortel's new DMS-PSA architecture, an Intelligent Network (IN) service applications development platform, is being introduced at the SuperComm '97 conference in New Orleans.

The Nortel DMS-PSA platform addresses the needs of public network service providers for customized service creation and rapid deployment of advanced telecommunication services. Under the terms of the agreement, Glenayre's MVP enhanced services platform integrates with the Nortel DMS switch, facilitating the deployment of enhanced Intelligent Network applications such as voice and fax messaging, voice activated services, and a personal number service.

``Today's subscribers want dynamic messaging services to help them remain flexible, yet still control their communications. Glenayre's MVP system is a leading enhanced services platform that, along with Nortel's new DMS- Programmable Services Architecture, will enable carriers to quickly introduce advanced enhanced messaging services to their market,'' said Vickie Yohe, vice president and general manager of the Carrier Networks group, Nortel.

The MVP System will enable incumbent local exchange carriers, interexchange carriers, competitive local exchange carriers, enhanced service providers, and cable operators to take advantage of a variety of features including voice mail, voice and fax messaging, intelligent message waiting notification, automatic callback, and the ability to make outbound calls (including long distance) directly from the voice mailbox. Glenayre's personal number service, CONSTANT TOUCH(TM), enables subscribers to combine all personal and business telephone numbers -- office, pager, cellular, home, and fax -- into a single number that will reach them anywhere.

Nortel's DMS-Programmable Services Architecture encompasses new software functionality for Nortel's DMS-250 and DMS-500 switching systems, IN technology platforms, and Nortel's extensive customer support services portfolio. With the new platform, service providers will have the ability to rapidly develop, trial, and deploy enhanced services, differentiating themselves from competition for a competitive advantage.

``Nortel has a reputation of delivering world-class products and services of the highest quality, and we are pleased to be working with them to provide advanced voice messaging development for the expanding public network service provider market,'' said Dan Case, president and general manager of Glenayre's Integrated Network Group.

``We are very excited Nortel has selected Glenayre to develop and market the next generation of enhanced services applications,'' said Bill Edwards, vice president of sales and marketing of Glenayre's MVP Systems Group. ``This alliance builds on our previously announced agreement to provide our MVP enhanced services platform to Nortel's GSM wireless customers.''

Nortel had 1996 revenues of $US 12.8 billion and has approximately 68,000 employees worldwide.
