Scientific Atlanta to boost production of Explorer set-top boxes
January 22, 2001 Scientific Atlanta announced plans to increase production of its interactive digital Explorer set-top boxes to 6 million units per year. Citing accelerating demand for digital cable and interactive television services, the company said it will add manufacturing capacity at its Mexico plant, increasing overall production to about 115,000 Explorer set-tops per week.
"Scientific-Atlanta has 7200 employees and a very modern 340,000 square foot plant in Juarez, Mexico,'' said Greg Taylor, Scientific-Atlanta's vice president of worldwide manufacturing. "Our primary goal is to make sure we're doing everything we can to meet the growing needs of our customers. We're very proud of our team in Juarez, which will now oversee the fifth major expansion in the last 18 months.''
The company also noted that more than 700,000 subscribers are currently using Explorer set-tops to access interactive TV applications. Due to the high demand for advanced digital receivers, quarterly shipments of digital set-tops exceeded 1.1 million units in the quarter ending December 29, 2000, the company said.
In a statement released last week, Scientific Atlanta disclosed that the production mix during the quarter continued to shift in favor of higher end Explorer 3000 and 3100 models. According to the company, more than 50% of digital set-top shipments were represented by the Explorer 3000 set-top line. itvreport.com |
