Ashton Announces Winter Field Program in Alberta

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--Robert T. Boyd, President and CEO of
Ashton Mining of Canada Inc. ("Ashton") announces the commencement
of the winter field program on the Buffalo Hills property in
north-central Alberta. The program will consist of the collection
of a mini-bulk sample from the K252 kimberlite and investigation
of new targets. The program will be completed by March 15, 2001.

K252 Mini-bulk Sample

The K252 kimberlite was discovered in March 2000 and has two
distinct phases, a fine-to-medium grained volcaniclastic
kimberlite and a kimberlite breccia. Encouraging microdiamond
results from both phases of the kimberlite led to the collection
of a 1.28 tonne mini-bulk sample during the fall. On December 7,
2000 Ashton reported an estimated diamond content of 66.2 carats
per hundred tonnes for this sample. The largest diamond recovered
weighed 0.36 carats.

The current program will utilize a reverse circulation drill rig
to collect a larger mini-bulk sample of up to 20 tonnes of
material representing both phases of the kimberlite. In addition,
a limited program of core drilling will test the interpreted
boundaries of the K252 geophysical anomaly.

Ground Geophysics and Target Drilling

During the current program, a number of electromagnetic, seismic
and magnetic anomalies will be tested by ground geophysical
surveys. These surveys are expected to identify several
high-priority targets for drilling this winter.

The joint venturers on the Buffalo Hills property and their
approximate interests are Ashton 45 percent, Alberta Energy
Company Ltd. 45 percent and Pure Gold Minerals Inc. 10 percent.
Each party has elected to contribute to this program in proportion
to its respective interest. Ashton is the operator of the
program.
