Re: the 1 GHz Athlon PC going for under $1000 in Europe never bothered you, did it?

Two differences;

First: AMD has 1.1GHZ and 1.2GHZ Athlons available in volume at moderately higher prices (there isn't a $500 jump to the next speed ala P4) meaning that AMD has a substantial percentage of its sales volume above 1GHZ.

Second: When $100 ASPs represent a business plan goal, and yield huge profits, $1,000 PCs aren't so bad. $100 ASPs for AMD are a goldmine, while $100 ASPs for Intel would be catastrophic.
