BUSINESS WIRE - January 22, 2001 13:56
HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., Jan 22, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL) announced today that Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT), a leading distributor, will sell, market and implement Symbol's complete line of mobile, wireless and bar code scanning data collection equipment and solutions, expanding Avnet's solution set that it sells to its enterprise and information technology (IT) resellers.

As part of the agreement, Avnet's leading hardware/software integration labs, which specialize in PC, Windows 2000 (WinNT) and Unix server standardization and extensive customization services, will integrate Symbol mobile and wireless devices in their development work for IT resellers. Additionally, resellers can select from Avnet/Symbol products for marketing and implementation to their own customers as well.

"The partnership with Avnet brings Symbol into new markets through IT-centric resellers," said Stanley P. Jaworski, Jr., vice president and general manager of Symbol's Channels and Alliances organization. "Through Avnet we can dramatically expand our customer base by taking the vertical nature of our business into the mainstream of IT. Avnet's value-added services combined with Symbol's market-leading technology enable resellers buying through Avnet to configure end-to-end solutions including everything from servers to wireless mobile computing devices."

"Avnet brings Symbol, the number one vendor of mobile computing and scanning devices into new customer segments," said Ned Kelly, senior vice president for Avnet CT. "Resellers integrating traditional IT products, from high-end servers to entry-point servers and PC processors, now have the opportunity to integrate Symbol's innovative hardware."
