WorldCom Press Release discusses contribution of Nortel and Fujitsi to Phase I (NYC to WaDC) link.

WorldCom Places 1.6 Terabits of Traffic on
Network

First Phase of Terabit Challenge Successfully Completed

CLINTON, Miss., January 8, 2001 – As a part
of its generation d initiative, WorldCom has
completed phase one of its Terabit Challenge,
placing 1.6 terabits over a hair-thin pair of
fibers.

The Terabit Challenge is a five-phase process
resulting in a complete optical network,
eliminating the need for signal regeneration and
optimizing the use of existing available
bandwidth. Phase One of the Terabit Challenge
deployed hyper dense wave division
multiplexing (DWDM) technology onto a
network route, connecting New York and
Washington, D.C.

“WorldCom remains dedicated to delivering
superior products and services to customers,
enabling them for the world of e-business,” said
Fred Briggs, WorldCom chief technology officer. “The successful
completion of the first phase of the WorldCom Terabit Challenge creates
a solid foundation for services such as web hosting, Virtual Private
Networks and web hosting.”

Following extensive lab testing, Fujitsu and Nortel Networks* were
chosen as suppliers for the technology necessary to complete phase
one of the WorldCom Terabit Challenge.

“We are delighted to take part in this unique Terabit Challenge. We are
extremely pleased with the performance of our FLASHWAVE* OADX,
which was used successfully to complete placing 1.76Tbps capacity
across WorldCom’s network,” said Bill Erickson, Fujitsu Network
Communications’ senior vice president of product planning. “The results
of the Terabit Challenge validate Fujitsu’s* leadership in DWDM
transport telecommunications equipment and, marks an industry
milestone by demonstrating the highest capacity DWDM platform in
commercial deployment today.”

“Nortel Networks is pleased to provide WorldCom with the Nortel
Networks OPTera* Long Haul 1600 Optical Line System, an open 10
Gbps DWDM system which supports 160 wave-lengths. Using this
bi-directional solution, WorldCom has quickly met aggressive
deployment schedules for live traffic through a simple and rapid
installation,” said Greg Mumford, president, Optical Internet, Nortel
Networks. “With the deployment of Nortel Networks’ high-performance
Optical Internet solutions, WorldCom has exponentially increased
capacity over its networks, with the capability to meet the explosive
bandwidth demands of e-business.”

WorldCom is taking a leadership role in sculpting the direction of digital
communications. Network optimization initiatives such as the Terabit
Challenge lay the groundwork for WorldCom to deliver key services that
will enable our customers for e-business.
