Referee Richard Steele retires

Hall of Fame referee Richard Steele has retired after 40 years in the sport of boxing. This announcement came as a shock to the Nevada State Athletic Commission at the officials' post fight meeting following the HBO-televised bout between Floyd Mayweather and Diego Corrales; where Steele had just beenpraised by the commission for his performance as the referee of that fight Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Steele told Fightnews, "I might as well quit while I'm on top." Steele, who runs the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Gym at Nevada Partners, said he will stay involved in the fight game and continue to train new officials, but "You'll never see me referee another fight."
