With Norton Utilities and Norton Antivirus (I buy them separate, I don't like SystemWorks), anyways, I always set it up that I do all the scans or defraging when I want to...manually.

I never, ever use the monitors, they are not an accurate reflection of what's going on and are, like you said a waste of resources.

My system runs much quicker with them all turned off.
