Naked Rocker Apologizes for R-Rated Show
in Rio
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - The bass player of heavy metal group Queens of the Stone Age could
not apologize enough on Friday after he was nabbed by authorities for playing naked in front of thousands of
people at the giant Rock in Rio music festival.
``Excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me,'' a sweaty and nervous Nick Oliveri was heard blurting out at the
festival's Office for the Protection of Minors after he appeared wearing nothing but his guitar while playing to a
near-capacity crowd of close to 250,000.
An official who heard the goateed heavy metal musician's apology said Oliveri excused his nakedness by
claiming to have appeared similarly exposed at concerts in other countries.
``I did not know it was a crime here in Brazil, otherwise I would not have done it,'' the official quoted Oliveri as
saying. ''I apologize to the public and the Brazilian people.''
The rocker, wearing Bermuda shorts and a towel, was held for about 10 minutes, until a festival lawyer arrived
and he was released.
It was not clear whether he would be charged with any offense.
If he is indicted on a corruption of minors charge, Oliveri might have to remain in Brazil to give statements and
could face a fine if found guilty.
Queens of the Stone Age, whose latest album is titled ``Rated R'', were playing on the fifth night of the
seven-day Rock in Rio concert which featured Sting, Guns N' Roses, and Oasis as well as local acts. |
