John,
I am not an engineer, but I did work in the electronics industry for many years. One of my companies was the VSAT division of AT&T which involved the transfer of one type of signal, then converting and amplifying it to be used in another form. The conversion always involves a number of electronic devices. The same can be said of opto-electronics. So, the AMLJ device will not look like something with a lot of optics and no electronics. To amplify and convert the signal, it must have electronics.
