Briefing.com on OPWV ...

Jan 18

Openwave Systems (OPWV)50 3/16 +3 1/16: This provider of Internet-based communication infrastructure software and applications to carriers, ISPs, portals, and broadband providers was created by the recent combination of Phone.com and Software.com. The stock is getting a nice boost today as Morgan Stanley initiated coverage on the company with a Strong Buy and $80 price target. The firm is expecting a loss of $0.03 for fiscal 2001 (ending June) and $0.46 for F2002. Openwave's target market is expected to grow at a strong clip. Morgan Stanley estimates that its market opportunity will grow from an estimated $1.9 billion in 2000 to $10.6 billion in 2005....Everyone agrees that Openwave enjoys a commanding position in wireless Internet infrastructure. They key will be whether it catches on with the average consumer. Will enough people want unified messaging, mobile mail, directory services, wireless Internet access gateways, voice processing, synchronization, and instant messaging? We believe the answer is yes....in time. In particular, what's becoming Openwave's killer application in the eyes of many is unified messaging. Unified messaging provides a single point of access to all three message types: voice, fax, and email from virtually any device such as a telephone or PC. When on the road, users can dial into the system from any telephone and be able to listen to and respond to any message waiting in their inbox. For example, the user can listen to their email messages using text-to-speech technology and respond to that email message with a voice message. The user can listen to the header of their fax message, forward that message to someone else, or even print it to the closest fax machine. The company is gaining critical mass as calendar 2001 revenue should be in the $580 million range which is impressive, but it trades at a forward p/e over 100x.
