Doc Watson Joins in FedEx Protest

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- Bluegrass musician Doc Watson entertained at
a protest against a planned Federal Express hub, but kept his word
not to use his music as part of the protest.

''We're here to enjoy ourselves,'' the 77-year-old Grammy winner said
Sunday before playing to a packed house at Guilford College.

Watson played no protest songs, saying, ''I have a definite objection
to noise pollution, but I don't live here and just want to play good
music tonight.''

The anti-hub Piedmont Quality of Life Coalition and the Piedmont
Classic Guitar Society said they hoped the concert would raise
awareness about the environmental and noise pollution they say the
FedEx hub could bring to Piedmont Triad International Airport.

FedEx announced plans for the $300 million hub in April 1998,
immediately attracting opponents who were concerned about noise from
night flights. The hub will require a third runway at the airport and
is scheduled to open in 2003.

The Federal Aviation Administration is doing an environmental impact
study to examine issues such as noise from FedEx planes.
